Online Training

The BSA Online Training Center provides a variety of materials, from quick references to complete courses, all designed to help our members improve leadership skills and deliver a quality program.

New Requirements for Trained Leader Emblem

All registered Cub Scout leaders must now complete the following four training courses to earn the Trained Leader emblem:

  • Fast Start Training for their position (online or instructor-led)
  • Youth Protection Training (online or instructor-led)
  • Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (for their position, instructor-led)
  • This Is Scouting

Training shows new leaders how to do their jobs and allows for an interchange of ideas with more experienced leaders. Every Cub Scout deserves qualified, trained leaders who will provide the best program possible, the way it is intended. Trained leaders ensure that the goals of Cub Scouting are met. The leadership training program of the Boy Scouts of America provides this information and helps leaders become confident in carrying out their responsibilities.

NEW! What Makes a Trained Leader?

Cub Scout Leader Fast Start
As the first step in the training continuum, Fast Start Training is meant to provide all the information and resources for new leaders to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow.

Basic Leader Training
Basic Leader Training—including This Is Scouting and position-specific training—is designed to prepare to all adult leaders in Cub Scouting to become effective in their roles.

Wood Badge
Wood Badge is advanced training in leadership skills for all adults in BSA programs.

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, this course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice.

Unit Leadership Enhancements
Delivered as a regular part of the pack leaders' meeting, these short training discussions are intended to better equip pack leaders to conduct a quality Cub Scout program.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is a one-day training event that introduces the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities.

Trainer Development Conference
The trainer development conference is part of a continuous process of updating trainers with the latest training methods, principles, and technologies.

Youth Protection Training
Every leader in Cub Scouting should complete Youth Protection training, which provides essential information about working with youth.

Cub Scout Leader Roundtables
Monthly roundtables provide an opportunity for leaders within a council to share ideas in an ongoing learning experience.

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow
The pow wow is a "convention" for pack leaders that provides an opportunity to attend sessions addessing various facets of the Cub Scout program.

National Cub Scouting Conferences
Cub Scout leader training conferences are held at the Philmont Training Center and the Florida Sea Base. Councils recommend individuals, who receive invitations to attend these conferences.

YOUTH PROTECTION - BSA IMPORTANT

Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Training Policies

Youth Protection Training is required for ALL registered volunteers.

New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before

they submit their application for registration.  The

certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is

made and before volunteer service with youth begins.

Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years

Youth Protection Training is available online at http://www.myscouting.org

YOUTH PROTECTION - HARRISBURG CATHOLIC DIOCESE

Harrisburg Catholic Diocesan Youth Protection Training Policies

Youth Protection Training must be taken every year

St. Joan of Arc now requires us to complete the Diocesan version of Youth Protection Training IN ADDITION to the BSA Youth Protection Training.  This training is completed online and takes about 45 minutes to an hour, please follow the link to complete.

After completing the training, please print out confirmation that you successfully completed the training, and give it to Mary Roman, our Chartered Organization Representative.  Eventually we are told that everyone completing the training should receive a badge to wear while on church grounds, Mary is working on this.

Mary is also still sorting out who needs to complete, but she said for now to assume that committee members and all adults who work directly with scouts should complete this training.
